Chapter 8

My heart felt full, like it could burst with happiness. Tommy and I had spent every possible minute together at school that week. We ignored the stares and the gossip, all the while falling deeper into each other. I didn’t care that I wasn’t part of the popular group anymore. I would much rather be happy than popular.

It was Thursday and every day after school Tommy had taken me to our diner. It had become “our” diner. We had ice-cream and sometimes milk shakes. I always played songs from Grease on the juke box. I loved going to the diner. Everything felt so right there. Being there was like being in a different time, a simpler time. For a few hours each day I forgot about all what was going on in the outside world.

It was the big football that Friday night. If I was still a cheerleader I would have been cheering for Brad and the team. I wasn’t going to go but I hadn’t had the courage to tell my parents that I had quit cheerleading. I knew that my dad would be furious and my mom disappointed. They had a plan for me and I wasn’t ready to tell them that I had my own plan.

I sighed blissfully as I felt Tommy come up behind me and put his arms around my waist. He was tall enough to put his chin on the top of my head. He slowly turned me around to face him. Kissing my neck and then brushing my lips with his made me get goose bumps all over my body. I closed my locker. We walked hand in hand to our usual table in the cafeteria. We didn’t say a word, but our eyes did all the talking.

“I was thinking about this Friday,” he began when we were sitting down.

“Uh huh,” I said running my fingers gently up and down his arm.

“How about we go see a show at the theatre?”

“That sounds cool. Which show?”

“Grease,” he said grinning broadly and holding up two tickets.

“Oh my gosh!” I screamed and flung my arms around his neck. People at the next table jumped. “I have wanted to see them that show since I was eight.”

“I like surprising you,” he grinned.

“I told you that you’re sweet,” I said nestling into his neck for a moment.

Suddenly I had an idea. I sat up straight. “And it’s perfect because my parents expect me to be at the game because I haven’t told them about quitting cheerleading yet. So I need to be out the house Friday.”

“Okay, you can drive your car and leave it in the diner parking lot and I’ll pick you up from there.”

“That’s a good plan. Only one more sleep until the show. I’m so excited.”

“You’re so cute too,” he said kissing me.

I finished off my macaroni cheese and glanced around the cafeteria. I had been purposely avoiding looking at Brad but my eyes accidentally fell on him. He was staring at me intensely. I shuddered and looked away.
